CASE PhD studentship in Medical Engineering: Mesh morphing strategies for image-based in-silico musculoskeletal biomechanics

In partnership with Simpleware Ltd & EPSRC, the University of Leeds wishes to recruit an outstanding graduate interested in a career in Medical Engineering.

Background:

There is critical need to develop, improve/target new & existing interventions. Developments/assessment of efficiency, can be achieved through in-silico models, like patient specific finite element models, that enable testing at early stages of treatment design & development. In development of finite-element models, it is well known that hexahedral mesh is beneficial on accuracy of computational analysis for applications highly relevant to musculoskeletal modelling. Building automatic hexahedral mesh is a research area on its own, so the development of image-specific hexahedral meshes is restricted to available tools which require lots of manual steps. This must be done for every set of images models are built on, and accuracy of the process is highly user-dependent.

Aim:

To facilitate next-generation in-silico model reproducibility/accuracy by developing mesh morphing/warping strategies usable in ScanIP to help adapting meshes coming from 3rd party tools.

Methods:

The PhD project will develop new morphing/warping algorithms based on existing meshing algorithms within scanIP. State-of-the-art will be advanced by creating multi-body meshes including image-based information such as grey-scale values. Validation of the developed tool using pre-clinical image databases from iMBE, public repositories on hip, ankle and spine. Superiority of using hexahedral meshes will be demonstrated in accurately modelling incompressible materials & tissues. New developed meshes will be used to assess difference in contact mechanics between tetrahedral & hexahedral meshes.

Facilities:

The successful candidate will join the vibrant, world leading Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering at the University of Leeds, leader in joint replacement/early interventions research. They will join over 100 graduate researchers with scope for extensive interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists/engineers in other  Schools/Faculties & clinicians at The Leeds Teaching Hospital Hospitals NHS Trust.

Project start date: September 16

Due to funding restrictions only EU/UK nationals, who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to their start date are considered for this award. EU students not ordinarily resident will be eligible for a Fees Only Award, except in exceptional circumstances.

Additional information

An inquisitive, creative mind, initiative to work independently are essential attributes. Knowledge of Python, VTK/ITK or C++ & experience with CAD/FE packages with evidence of high levels of communication/team-working skills are highly desirable.  Interviews will be held W/C 11/01/16. Funding for this studentship is subject to the outcome of an internal selection due early February 16.
