In 2015 language researchers from the University of Helsinki and Stockholm University launched a two-year cooperation project on languages and language contacts. Based at the Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, the project focuses on language encounters now and in the past. The project will produce new cross-disciplinary information about the coexistence of minority and majority languages in Finland, Sweden and the broader Baltic Sea region as well as about what such coexistence has meant from the language perspective and how it has been maintained in practice. The aim is to study multilingualism and its impact by generating understanding of the management of language encounters now and in the future. The cross-disciplinary research also aims to increase cooperation between language scholars and to develop inter-university collaboration in doctoral education. The Doctoral Programme for Language Studies at the Faculty of Arts also participates in the cooperation. The project is coordinated by the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies. The Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies (http://www.helsinki.fi/fus/) is Finland’s largest and most diverse centre of research and academic education in Finnish, Swedish and related languages as well as literature written in them. The Department is an internationally renowned centre of learning in Finno-Ugrian and Nordic languages as well as home to the world’s largest concentration of Finnish language and literature research and academic teaching.
