Funding opportunities for Biomedical Engineering

At Dalhousie university  Canada, the  School of Biomedical Engineering provides scholarship funding for qualified graduate students in the Masters and PhD program. Thet average funding levels for MASc and PhD students were approximately $20,500 and $28,000, respectively. The university get its Funding  a variety of sources including external scholarships (NSERC, CIHR, NSHRF, NSGS, MITACs) and internal scholarships (FGS, Faculty of Engineering) and other research grants from private institutions.   If you are an international student with no scholarship, the following are the breakdown of the fees:

  • $16,809.29 per year in MASc
  • $17,199.29 per year in the PhD program
Most universities also offer teaching assistantships (TA) to additionally supplement their income.   All  students including International students can apply for the following post graduate scholarships: Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation Scotia Scholarships  offers up to at $10,000  scholarships per year for  masters and  PhD students in Biomedical engineering and other health related disciplines. The Nova Scotia Health Scholarship is tenable at the following schools:
  • Acadia University - PhD, Master’s, Undergraduate
  • Cape Breton University - Undergraduate
  • Dalhousie University – PhD, Master’s
  • Mount Saint Vincent University - PhD, Master’s
  • Saint Mary’s University - PhD, Master’s
  • St. Francis Xavier University - PhD, Master’s, Undergraduate
Interested students should pay attention to the eligibility criteria: Doctoral Level Awards
  • Have applied to, be accepted in, or, be enrolled in Year 1, 2 or 3 of a full-time thesis-based Doctoral degree program at a participating Nova Scotian university.
Master's Level Awards
  • Have applied to, be accepted in, or be enrolled in Year 1 of a full-time thesis-based Master’s degree program.
Undergraduate Level Awards
  • Be enrolled full-time in and completed at least two full years of an honours or advanced major undergraduate degree program at a participating Nova Scotian university.
The applicant must also:
  • Be engaged in research activities relevant to the NSHRF research priorities.
  • Have achieved a first-class average (as determined by the university) in the last two years of full time study.
  • Be in good standing for enrollment in the upcoming school year.
  • Not be receiving research trainee funding through an NSHRF Scotia Support Grant
  • Not be employed full-time
