The Doctoral Programme in Sociology aims at forming highly qualified researchers, capable of doing both applied and fundamental research in universities and scientific research centres or market research institutes. The systematic integration of theory and empirical research is one of the core principles of this Doctoral Programme. To that end, students are provided with courses on classical and contemporary theoretical readings, guided through the in-depth study of sociological theory and stimulated in their own theoretical reasoning. As social theory has to highlight and guide front-edge empirical research, students are furthermore instructed in contemporary social science research methods and advanced quantitative and qualitative techniques, necessary for the realisation of successful research projects. Particular attention is placed on interdisciplinary competencies, especially in the research areas of the Department of Sociology and Social Research.
