Ref: EBW010613

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship within the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Industrial Sustainability (www.industrialsustainability.org.uk) which is a consortium of four of the leading UK universities in this field. You will be based at Loughborough University in the Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technologies (SMART). The Centre for SMART provides synergy for the growing teaching and research activities in sustainable design and manufacture. The remit of the Centre is to develop strategies, methodologies and supporting technologies for the sustainable design, production, use and disposal of products, that meet society’s needs, while safe-guarding the future prosperity of manufacturing businesses.

Your own area of research, which will be developed with your supervisor, will contribute to the advancement of Resource Efficient Manufacturing (REM) through the development of new knowledge, technologies, processes or tools, so as to provide UK manufacturing with cutting edge research that will support them in meeting the sustainable manufacturing challenges of the future. During the three year research program, you will review existing knowledge and leading practice in REM to develop your expertise and direct your line of research, leading to the development of your own novel methodologies, tools or supporting technology. In addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Centre for SMART, you will also work alongside a world leading manufacturer such as Toyota, General Motors, and Unilever, to ensure your research achieves its maximum impact within the manufacturing industry.
