We are looking to recruit an experienced researcher or highly-skilled engineer for a role encompassing research, technical/methods development, and facility support. The successful candidate will undertake independent scientific/technical research into new and improved methods for cryo-electron tomography within the research group of John Briggs. The successful candidate will also implement, optimize and develop methods and instrumentation for cryo-electron tomography within the world-leading electron microscopy facility at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK.
The principal aim of John Briggs’ research group is the development and application of electron microscopy methods within a research programme aimed at structural and mechanistic studies of the assembly, maturation and fusion of enveloped viruses and coated vesicles. The principle aim of the EM facility is the development and application of electron cryomicroscopy and tomography in the context of Structural Biology.
The LMB moved into a new building in 2013. The EM facility at LMB includes two Titan Krios microscopes, Polara, Scios dual-beam, two 200kV FEG microscopes and 3 T12/Spirit microscopes. In addition, the EM facility has a suite of associated equipment for sample preparation. The Briggs group is relocating from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory to the LMB.
The successful candidates main duties will include: undertaking independent scientific research aimed at implementing, optimizing and developing new and existing methods for cryo-electron tomography and associated techniques; together with other members of the research group, applying improved methods to research fusion mechanisms of enveloped viruses and coated vesicles; supporting the provision of cryo-electron tomography services and equipment within the EM Facility.
Depending on experience, appointment will be made at MRC Band 3 or 4, for full job descriptions please visit our recruitment website. A relevant PhD degree or an equivalent level of technical experience, excellent communication skills, substantial technical expertise with electron microscopes, and the ability to independently carry out a scientific/technical experimental research programme, are essential.
Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement. You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as
