Application deadline: Â 30th June 2013
Start date: 30th September 2013
Duration: Three years
This award is funded by the School of Engineering in support of the RCUK funded Interdisciplinary Centre for Storage, Transformation and Upgrading of Thermal Energy (i-STUTE).
The energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of adsorption refrigerator or heat pump systems depend critically on the heat and mass transfer within the sorption vessel together with its thermal mass. A âgood designâ depends on integrating the conflicting requirements of enhanced heat transfer, good mass transfer, low thermal mass , corrosion resistance, resistance to extreme thermal and pressure cycling, all with the overarching constraint of low production cost. The project can deal with one or more of these areas as it develops, for example, enhancing heat transfer, novel mechanical design and manufacturing techniques, optimisation for different refrigerants (low pressure methanol v. high pressure ammonia), or alternative thermodynamic cycles. Whatever the detailed topic there will be the need for computational modelling (writing code in Matlab or similar), experimental design and testing.
Background information on the new £5.2M research centre may be found at i-STUTE 4 page summary.pdf and i-STUTE presentation Cambridge.pdf. More information on adsorption cycles may be found at REC Chapter10.pdf and recent research at Warwick IOR2011.pdf and Critoph6thOctl2011London.pdf.
ELIGIBILITY The Scholarship will pay an annual stipend at the standard rate (currently £13,726) and tuition fees at the Home/EU rate for three years. Overseas students may apply but due to funding restrictions, if successful would be required to make up the difference in fees between the home and the overseas rates
