2022 Eon Essay Contest on The Precipice

The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity by Toby Ord, a philosopher at Oxford University, discusses some of the most important issues of our time. It raises awareness about existential risks, which are risks that threaten humanity’s long-term potential. Addressing these risks may be among the most pressing moral issues of our time.

Students are asked to read the book titled "The Precipe" and write an essay containing 1,200 words.

How to apply:

To enter the Contest, each entrant must complete and submit the “Contest Entry Form” found on the Contest Site, including completion of all of the elements described in this Section (each, an “Entry”) prior to the end of the Contest Period.  A complete Entry will include, in addition to all other materials and information requested in the Contest Entry Form:

A. The entrant’s full name, email address, and state/province/territory, and country of the primary residence of the entrant;

B. The entrant’s age at time of submission;

C. The name and address of the Educational Institution in which the entrant is enrolled;

D. A written essay based on the book The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity by Toby Ord (the “Book”) in response to the prompt posted on the Contest Site for the entrant’s applicable Age Category.  The essay must be written in English and no more than 1,200 words in length (excluding title, footnotes, endnotes, and/or citations), double-spaced, and in PDF format. The PDF file’s name should include the entrant’s name, and body of the essay should not include any identifying information about the entrant.  If an entrant does not have access to a copy of the Book, the entrant may request a physical or e-book copy free of charge through the Contest Site.
