ESRC SWDTC Studentships in Global Political Economy: Transformations and Policy Analysis (based in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Bath)

About the South-West Doctoral Training Centre The South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC) is one of the UK’s largest Centres of postgraduate research training for social scientists. It has been formed by the collaboration of the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter and is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

The SWDTC delivers a number of research training pathways. Each pathway comprises two parts: a one-year MRes programme, followed by the three-year MPhil or PhD research programme (known as the ‘1’ and the ‘+3’ stages respectively).

The Global Political Economy: Transformations and Policy Analysis pathway Whilst based in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences, this interdisciplinary pathway can include the following subject areas:

  • Economics
  • Education
  • Politics Languages & International Studies
  • Social & Policy Sciences
  • Management

1 Stage: Masters of Research: MRes Global Political Economy: Transformations & Policy Analysis

+3 Stage: Doctor of Philosophy: PhD Global Political Economy: Transformations & Policy Analysis

Our Graduate School community The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences’ dedicated Graduate School provides academic and administrative support before and during your studies at Bath. It creates a great community of 2,000 like-minded postgraduate students to share ideas, learn from and socialise with.

The University offers postgraduate students everything from a dedicated Graduate Centre, to skills training and career advice with the Researcher Development Unit.

Successful Candidates should:

  1. Fulfil the entrance requirements for a Global Political Economy PhD (i.e. the +3 route) (see links to programmes in the table above) - offers subsequently made may be conditional on you successfully completing the MRes first (i.e. a 1 + 3 route).
  2. Fulfil the ESRC DTC terms and conditions (http://www.bath.ac.uk/hss/pdf/funding-terms-conditions/esrc-swdtc-studentships.pdf)

The ESRC SWDTC Studentship is for UK students and the funding for the 1+3 pathway is for 4 years (3 years for the +3 route). Each year provides:

  • Home/EU tuition fee
  • Stipend of £13,726 (for living expenses) (2014/15 rate to be confirmed)
  • Training Support Grant of £750 per year (for travel, fieldwork etc.)

The ESRC DTC Fees-only Award is for students from EU countries other than the UK and the funding for the 1+3 pathway is for 4 years (3 years for the +3 route). Each year provides:

  • Home/EU tuition fee
  • Training Support Grant of £750 per year (for travel, fieldwork etc.)

Students will need to find alternative sources of funding for living expenses.
