Applicants are invited for a full-time University PhD studentship to support and work in the Department of Health, alongside Professor Anna Gilmore and colleagues, with links to Professor David Miller in the Department for Social and Policy Sciences.
Background
This studentship is to explore transnational tobacco company and/or other corporate efforts to influence European or UK policymaking. The candidate will join the Tobacco Control group (www.bath.ac.uk/health/research/tobacco-control/).
The Project
The studentship is designed to run alongside a major US National Cancer Institute grant. The successful applicant will be expected to agree a plan of work which is consistent with the grant outline. Our hope is that applicants will concentrate on corporate influence on risk regulation in Europe or Better Regulation in the UK, on aspects of corporate influence on the European Tobacco Products Directive (including the role of impact assessment and stakeholder consultation in mediating such influence), or on the implementation of Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Europe.Â
The Successful Candidate should:
Applications are welcome from graduates with a strong academic record who wish to develop a career in research. Candidates will have a good undergraduate degree (First or Upper Second) in a relevant discipline and preferably a good taught postgraduate degree. Non-native English speaking applicants must meet the Departmental English Language requirement at the point of application (www.bath.ac.uk/study/pg/programmes/scho-for-heal-mphi).
The Award
The successful candidate will be supported for three 3 years of full-time study, this will include a £13,726 (2013/14 rate) p.a. stipend, annual Home/EU tuition fees (successful international students will need to source alternative funding to pay the shortfall in Fees) and an annual Training Support Grant.
How to Apply
Applicants should apply online via the Apply button below to study for a full time PhD in Health. It is important to quote the project title (see above) on your application.
Please note that although this studentship is to work on a specific project, there is scope for the candidate to shape the work and candidates must therefore ensure they complete the section 3b of the Funding Request Form (which must be uploaded with the online application form for a full time PhD in Health) outlining how they propose to take this research forward.
In addition to the standard application form, applicants are asked to send two examples of their written work to health-pgr-admissions@bath.ac.uk by the application deadline. When emailing it is important to quote your full name and the project title (see above).
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 12pm GMT, Tuesday 13 August 2013. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview at the University of Bath on 20 or 21st August.
Informal Enquiries
Informal enquiries regarding the project can be made to Professor Anna Gilmore (a.gilmore@bath.ac.uk) or Professor David Miller (d.miller@bath.ac.uk).
