Revisiting spinal cord injury rehabilitation through applications of contemporary design approaches
The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is offering an AHRC funded Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD bursary for full time study in collaboration with the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit (QENSIU) at the Glasgow Southern General Hospital. The study is provisionally entitled âRevisiting spinal cord injury rehabilitation through applications of contemporary design approachesâ. We are inviting applications from candidates from a broad range of relevant fields, not only from Design, but also from the Allied Healthcare Professions and Social Sciences. (NB only Home and EU applicants are eligible for this studentship).
PhD bursaries are for three years. All studentships have full tuition remittance and a maintenance allowance. Applicants must have a strong academic background, with a degree in a relevant area at 2:1 or higher and normally have a Master's degree qualification.
GSA has a distinctive specialist research culture which is widely recognised internationally. The generation of new knowledge and understanding through creative practice, scholarship and criticism in Fine Art, Design, Architecture and related fields is central to the concept of research. Our researchers include artists, designers, architects, historians and critics of world standing. Current research addresses contemporary questions of the creative industries, technology and digital media, environmental change, future cities, connected communities, and care for the future. The School of Design has a history of engagement in design research in health and wellbeing. The newly formed Institute of Design Innovation is a core partner of the recently announced Digital Health Institute (Scotland), an SFC-funded Innovation Centre. Current supervisors and projects can be seen online: http://www.gsa.ac.uk/research/supervisors-plus-students/
QENSIU is responsible for both the acute and lifelong care of patients with spinal cord injury from throughout Scotland. The Unit admits 150 new patients annually and provides follow up for 4500 patients in QENSIU and at outreach clinics all around Scotland. QENSIU works closely with several universities, e.g. the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, in The Scottish Centre for Innovation in Spinal Cord Injury (SCISCI). This unique research centre is situated within the Unit, ensuring close links between patients, clinicians and academic staff. Further details can be seen online: http://www.scisci.ac.uk/
The successful candidate will be expected to work in residence both at the GSA and QENSIU.
The application form and guidelines can be downloaded from the Apply button below.
