Programme Closing Date: 7 February 2013
Our students and researchers are based in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. We have a number of high profile writers on staff who offer PhD supervision, including the award-winning short story writer, poet and memoirist Jackie Kay and the prominent poet, dramatist and contemporary critic Sean O'Brien. The Creative Writing section's research interests are very varied, including: Creative Writing theory and practice; short story; novel; children's literature; women's autobiographical writing; memoir; contemporary British poetry; Scottish poetry; poetry in translation; twentieth-century women's poetry; scriptwriting; dramatic structure; dramaturgy; documentary film; cross-platform interactive work; Feminist and Queer theory; trauma theory; writing and health.
We are also home to the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts, a research centre with the highest reputation for bringing world-class writers to Newcastle to read, give talks, and hold seminars with our PhDs. Recent visitors have included Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Paul Muldoon and Marilynne Robinson. We also have an extensive digital archive of past events. We have a large postgraduate body at PhD level, and this busy community of writers are involved with events, publications, and residencies including regular Trashed Organ readings, the online magazine Friction, and the AHRC-funded Write Around the Toon project.
For 2013 entry, Creative Writing is able to submit nominations to an open competition across all the University's Block Grant Partnership (BGP) subjects for the award of an additional two AHRC doctoral studentships through the AHRC's Doctoral Awards scheme. This scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree (PhD).Â
Home (UK) students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of three years are eligible for a full award comprising fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,590 (2012/13 rates). Other EU students are eligible for a fees-only award. To see if you would be eligible for a full or fees only award, please refer to the AHRC's residency eligibility criteria in Annex A of the AHRC Studentship Funding Guide (PDF: 500KB).
