Two AHRC-funded PhD Studentships on Napoleonic theatre at the University of Warwick

Maintenance grant in line with the UK Research Council stipend (£13,755 for full-time award holders in 2012-13) plus fees (UK/EU level)

The Department of French Studies at the University of Warwick invites applications for two fully-funded PhD studentships from outstanding candidates to work with Dr Katherine Astbury on a major new project on French Theatre of the Napoleonic era funded by the AHRC. More details about the project and detail of suggested PhD topics can be found on the following page: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/french/research/napoleonictheatre/

It is hoped that one of the two doctoral theses will explore the role of tragedy under Napoleon and the other look at the concept of adaptation but there is room for a candidate to shape the thesis to their own research interests in consulation with the Principal Investigator.

The Department of French Studies at Warwick promotes an intellectually challenging and innovative approach to French Studies. It is one of the leading Departments of French Studies in the country, highly rated in both teaching and research, and enjoys a strong international reputation. Importantly, the department secured an exceptional rating in the UK's most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008): according to the proportion of research classified in the top two categories ('world-leading' and 'internationally excellent'), the department was placed equal first among all UK French Departments returned. In terms of the consistency of excellence or average score of the Department's submission as a whole, we were rated joint second in the whole of the UK.

The successful candidates will join both a vibrant departmental postgraduate body and a very strong interdisciplinary faculty grouping of researchers.

Applicants should normally have a good first degree or equivalent in a relevant field, and ideally will already have, or will be near to having, a postgraduate qualification such as a Master's or an equivalent further relevant form of academic experience.

Awards available: 2 awards available

Funding Details: This includes full tuition fees for graduate research (EU/UK rates (£3,508 for full-time students in 2012-13) and a grant in line with the UK Research Councils' standard maintenance grant (£13,755 for full-time award holders in 2012-13).

Length of Award: The studentships will be for full-time study over three years, commencing in October 2013
Eligibility:  Available to Home (UK & EU) students

Application Details: Informal inquiries may be made to the grant holder, Dr Katherine Astbury (katherine.astbury@warwick.ac.uk) in the first instance.

Applications by email attachment are acceptable (caroline.parker@warwick.ac.uk).

Short-listed candidates will also be required to submit a separate application for admission to Warwick University's Graduate School, via the University's on-line system: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/ <http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/> .
