Award: Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded PhD studentship administered collaboratively by the University of Glasgow, Christieâs Education, and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). The successful student will be registered at the University of Glasgow and jointly supervised by Dr Debra Strickland (University of Glasgow), Professor M.A. Michael (Christieâs Education) and Glyn Davies (V&A). They will be primarily based in London at the V&A as part of an exciting new collaborative project documenting English medieval embroidery and the functions of liturgical vestments. The focus of study will be on the V&Aâs collection of liturgical vestments, particularly those decorated with opus anglicanum, and it will contribute to an important new exhibition on English Medieval Embroidery planned to be held at the V&A in three yearsâ time.
The studentship, which is funded for three years (full-time equivalent) will begin in January 2014. It will cover the studentâs tuition fees at the home/EU rate and provide a maintenance award at RCUK rates (currently £13,726 per annum). The V&A will cover up to £3,000 in total towards appropriate travel and research expenses during the studentship.
Eligibility:  The studentship is open to UK or EU citizens who satisfy AHRC academic and residency criteria. Applicants should hold a first or upper second class degree, and hold or be studying for an MSc or MA degree in a relevant area of history. An overall MSc/MA grade of 65% or more is required. The successful candidate will also need to satisfy AHRC academic and residency eligibility criteria (see Annex A of the Student Funding Guide: http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/Student-Funding-Guide.pdf). Please note that you must be a resident of the UK or an EU country to be eligible to apply. EU students who meet residency requirements (resident in the UK for 3 years or more directly prior to application for the purposes of study or other) may be considered for a full award of fees and maintenance; EU applicants who do not meet residency requirements will be eligible for a fees-only award.
Applying:Â Applicants should submit a short curriculum vitae and a brief letter outlining reasons for interest in the studentship and their qualifications for it. The names and contact details of two academic referees should also be supplied.
