Job Purpose

Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh

he School of English is pleased to offer an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Studentship for October 2013 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The studentship will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for three years and include an annual maintenance grant.

Research Areas and Supervision

Professor Martin Stanard (University of Leicester) and Professor David Bradshaw (University of Oxford) are co-executive editors of an ambitious five-year project to produce the first scholarly edition of the works of Evelyn Waugh.

The successful applicant will work on the edition’s hugely expanded corpus of letters, and on the revised diaries. The successful applicant will research:

  1. the cultural context of the production of Mark Amory’s The Letters of Evelyn Waugh (London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1980) and of Michael Davies’s The Diaries of Evelyn Waugh (London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1976), the furore surrounding the reception of both books, the impact they had on Waugh’s posthumous public image, and the scholarly limitations of each edition
  2. how the additional material opens new areas of, for instance, aesthetic, political and theological discussion around Waugh’s work
  3. theoretical issues relating to life-writing and to the use and interpretation of letters and diaries as evidence in scholarly biography

All this will be focussed in a central argument which re-reads Waugh’s writing in the light of the new material. The successful applicant will be free to choose whether to cover the entire works or to select a section or theme (e.g. the pre-war or post-war writings) - but the aim will be to produce a thesis which will become a ground-breaking book suitable for submission to a publisher within a year of completion and which will form a companion volume to the edition. The successful applicant will also be invited to co-edit the proceedings of the project’s international conference in 2015.

The successful applicant will be supervised by
Professor Martin Stannard.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in English literature or a relevant discipline and meet the University’s standard English language entry requirements. It is expected that applicants will have a relevant Masters degree or be able to show evidence that they will achieve this before the start (or shortly after the start) of the PhD programme.

Due to funding restrictions this studentship is only available to applicants who are eligible to pay the UK/EU tuition fee - i.e., those who are permanently resident in the UK or another EU country. Please note that applicants from the EU (excluding the UK) must have been resident in the UK for at least three years prior to commencing the studentship to receive both the stipend and fee components of this award; EU applicants who do not meet this criteria will receive the fee waiver component only.

Applicants from outside the EU are not eligible for this studentship unless they have been granted permanent UK residency/citizenship. For more advice on applicable eligibility criteria, please see the AHRC Guide to Student Funding.

The studentship is for full-time campus based study only and applicants should be able to commence their studies in October 2013 - however it may be possible to commence at an alternative date subject to negotiation.
