BBSRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship in Computational Biology Streamlining phenotyping for the energy crop miscanthus using computational & modelling approach

A BBSRC funded 4-yr Industrial Case PhD studentship in collaboration with Ceres Inc. (http://www.ceres.net/) is available at the Environmental Impact Theme, Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), Aberystwyth University http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/ibers/. The project will also feature a placement at Ceres Inc. in USA

This project aims to build the computational association crop models to identify what is the minimum measurement required for phenotyping in order to achieve the optimal effect either for phenotypic selection (PS) and/or genomic selection (GS). This will enable a dramatic reduction in phenotyping costs while retaining the same precision in selection for breeding. This post will be embedded in a £6.3M GIANT Link project funded by Defra/BBSRC/Industry http://www.miscanthusbreeding.org/ and will have close interaction with scientists at IBERS and industrial partners of GIANT. The successful student will gain valuable skill in computational biology and its application on bioenergy and impact on the issue of climate change.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum of 2:1 level honours degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering or physics. A Masters qualification in a similar area, and/or previous experience of working in computational biology or bioinformatics would be beneficial.

The project will commence from October 2013 or January 2014 and due to funding restrictions is open to UK/EU nationals. This studentship provides full support for tuition fees, associated research costs, the travelling & living cost to USA and Europe (Germany and Italy) for placement & data collection and an annual tax-free stipend anticipated to be at least £13,590.

How to apply and further information: Any enquiry relating to the project and applications with a full CV and personal statement should be address to Dr. Lin S Huang lsh@aber.ac.uk; Tel: +44 (0)1970 823109. The full details of this BBSRC case studentship can also be found by clicking the Apply link below.

Application deadline: Early application is advised as the position remains open until filled.
