Project description
Cell senescence may be a relevant driver of mammalian ageing. For instance, ablation of senescent cells âcuredâ some age-related functional disabilities in mice (Baker et al. Nature 2011). Until very recently, senescence has only been thought of in the context of replication-competent cells, i.e. as a potential ageing mechanism in proliferating tissues. We showed for the first time that postmitotic neurons in the brain and other tissues also develop a senescent (Jurk et al Aging Cell 2012). This is important as it opens up a new inroad into understanding and potentially modifying ageing in postmitotic tissues.
The student will test the hypothesis that multiple postmitotic cells (myocytes, cardiomyocytes, adipocytes) develop a senescent phenotype and that this might contribute to ageing in the respective tissues. He/she will work to about equal parts at the Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle University and at the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Ageing, Mayo Clinic, ensuring the use of the most informative mouse models, the best available methodology and intense knowledge transfer between both labs.
