The MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics at the University of Manchester provides a firm grounding in advanced quantitative methods. It includes training in: research design, qualitative methods, how to conduct a survey, data analysis, software such as SPSS, STATA, R, MLwiN, statistical modelling, longitudinal data analysis, demography, population forecasting and social network analysis. Modules are taught with an emphasis on hands-on training. Students are also able to take a wide range of other professional skills training whilst at Manchester including from the short courses programme. See www.ccsr.ac.uk/courses/
Research in Social Statistics and Sociology was rated joint first in the last Research Assessment Exercise, with the highest proportion of research judged to be âworld leadingâ of any UK higher education institution.
The MSc programme is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years. Often people take the course whilst working part time.

One bursary of £1,000 towards MSc fees is available to a LARIA member.
