Business School PhD Scholarships

The University of West London is a leading modern university specialising in the education and development of connected, creative, business and service professionals.

In 2011/12 non-EU students accounted for 33.5% of the UK Higher Education sector’s income from tuition fees and education contracts, this was approximately £3.23billion (HESE, 2013). Whilst there is significant literature about the experiences of overseas students studying in the UK, little empirical work has been undertaken exploring the economic impact of knowledge transfer once the student has returned home.

The Business School is now offering two PhD Scholarships to conduct research into the impact of UK PG business and management education on overseas local economies.

The successful candidate will have a good first degree (upper second) and normally have a good Master’s degree (65% or distinction) in Business, Management or related discipline.

The candidate should be able to work in a collaborative environment, and have a strong commitment to reaching research excellence and achieving assigned objectives. It is expected that the PhD candidate will conduct applied research work that will start with the establishment of a theoretical framework, continue with an empirical investigation and establish validation through a real-life user study.

The successful candidate will register as a full-time MPhil/PhD student, and the Scholarship includes:

  • MPhil/PhD fee waiver at the home/EU rate (scholarship only open to UK/EU students);
  • Tax-free stipend of £7000 per annum;
  • 1 x field trip (subject to an agreed research methodology);
  • Opportunity to work as an Associate Lecturer in the Business School for six hours per week (seminars, tutorials, marking and assisting in monitoring the academic progress of students);
  • Support, subject to satisfactory performance and academic progress, for three years.
