David Goldman PhD Scholarship in Innovation and Enterprise

Reference Code: GOLD

Closing Date: 9th September 2013

Name of the Supervisors
The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Savvas Papagiannidis, the David Goldman Professor of Innovation and Enterprise and a second supervisor who will be determined dependent on the applicant’s proposed research area.

The Goldman Endowment
In 2001 the Goldman family made an endowment to Newcastle University Business School to commemorate the life and work of David Goldman, founder and Chief Executive of the North East’s iconic software company, the Sage Group plc. David had played a leading role in transforming the economic fortunes of the North East region. The Goldman Endowment has enabled the School to establish two positions, both designed to stimulate entrepreneurship and foster innovation within the North East of England. It also made it possible to offer a PhD Scholarship in the area. For more information please visit Newcastle University Business School’s website.

Duration of the Award
Three years full time PhD scholarship for a student starting in the academic year 2013/14.

Project Description
This studentship is available to someone with a strong background and a research focus in the areas of innovation and enterprise. Given the scope of the endowment, we are primarily interested in sponsoring a student who has an interest in social enterprising and regional innovation. Alternatively, following David Goldman’s background and business interests, topics related to digital and IT innovation are also welcome. Ideally, the theme proposed should relate to the North East of England, although this is not mandatory. If in doubt, please contact Professor Savvas Papagiannidis.

Value of the Award and Eligibility
The studentship will cover PhD fees at the UK/EU rate and a level of subsistence equal to that provided by ESRC studentships (estimated rate of £13,590 in 2013/14).

Please Note: Applicants of UK/EU and International status can apply but the studentship will only cover fees at the UK/EU rate, therefore international students will be required to pay the difference between UK/EU and international fees for three years.

Person Specification
Applicants should have a good Honours degree (ideally first-class or upper-second-class Honours) in an area related to the proposed field of study. It would be an advantage if you also had, or expected to receive by Autumn 2013, a Master’s-level qualification at ‘credit’ or preferably ‘distinction’ level in a relevant subject area.

How to Apply
You must complete the University’s postgraduate application form, selecting 'PhD Newcastle University Business School (full time) - Business’ as the programme of study. Once you have selected the programme please insert the studentship/partnership reference GOLD. Only mandatory fields need to be completed, but a full and detailed CV, an outline research proposal of around 1,000 – 2,000 words and a personal statement of around 500 words setting out your reasons for applying must also be included.

Further Information
Details about the School’s research activities, including the PhD programme, can be found on the School’s webpages. The successful candidate will join the Marketing, Operations and Systems group.
