The student will undertake research on interfaces to next generation of image sensors (Cameras) for radiotherapy of cancer patients, working closely with industry and a cancer hospital.

There will be a requirement to spend 50% of the time on secondment to AWAIBA on the island of Madeira – this will be in 1 or 2 phases of a minimum of 6 months and maximum of 18 months (to a total amount of 18 months).

Candidate Requirements

Prospective candidates must meet the residency criteria for Marie Curie fellowships, as described in the EC’s regulations on early career researchers:

  • Early Stage Researchers must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
  • Furthermore, at the time of recruitment, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

Exceptions to these criteria cannot be made.

In addition, candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

Essential:

  • A first class honours degree in Engineering (General or Electrical/Electronics/Communication), Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Experience in either FPGA based software design (using VHDL or Verilog) or analogue circuit design. Alternatively, advanced coursework may be accepted as evidence of skills required.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills – English skills as required by University regulations.
  • Excellent record of academic and/or professional achievement.

Desirable:

  • Publications in international conferences or international journals.
  • Experience in the field of CMOS image sensors.
  • Experience of FPGA based driver design for sensors.
  • Experience of Cadence or any other chip design software.
  • Experience of Matlab.
  • Advanced knowledge of any programming language (for example C, C++, Java).
  • Experience with digital cameras and related image processing.
