Doctoral Scholarship Graphene and Biomedical Research

The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences invites applications for a prestigious 3.5 year fully-funded President’s Doctoral Scholar award. The scholarship supports a PhD in graphene research with application to medical devices and health interventions.

The ‘Louis Wong Hak Wood Presidential Doctoral Scholarship’* is in recognition of the University’s outstanding reputation in graphene and medical based research. The areas anticipated to form the basis of the PhD are:

  • Biointegration – using graphene to help new tissue implants adopt once they have been placed in, or on, the body. This is the last great barrier to rebuilding damaged tissues, particularly tissues like cartilage in osteoarthritis and skin in burns.
  • Biological barriers - graphene has an ability to adapt and go where other molecules can’t. The challenge is designing graphene structures as carriers to transport high concentration payloads across bio-membranes for selective delivery to difficult biological targets.
  • Selective adsorptive properties of graphene – graphene can be used to detoxify, to carry drugs, and improve the sensitivity of imaging by ensuring that molecules can be removed from the body or get to exactly the right cells to improve their effectiveness. The potential to support treatment of diseases and poisoning is therefore significant.

*We are grateful to alumnus Louis Wong Hak Wood (BSc Engineering 1974) whose support has made this Doctoral Scholarship possible. Mr Wong retired as Managing Director-Project Management and Board of Director of Shui On Land in 2011 but still serves as a consultant to the company. Louis joined Shui On Group in 1981 and managed its building construction business in Hong Kong and property development in Mainland China.

Applicants should ideally hold a Masters degree from one of the following institutions:

PR China: A University recognised as a member of ‘Project 985’ (see link below for list of eligible Universities)

Hong Kong: University of Hong Kong; Chinese University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

The degree must have been awarded with a GPA of minimum 3.2/4.0 in one of the biological/medical sciences, biochemistry, engineering, materials science, physics, pharmacology or other related subject.

The scholarship provides full support for international PhD tuition fees, an annual living allowance of £14,726 and covers all research expenses. The intended start date for the PhD is January 2014. We particularly encourage applications from Chinese or Hong Kong residents in recognition of the funding donation.

Please direct applications in the following format to Christine Burns (christine.burns@manchester.ac.uk via the Apply button below):
