4 years (Biosciences MRes followed by a three year PhD)
Project description
Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy techniques allow direct non-invasive measurement of tissue metabolite content. We use MRI in preclinical and human research to monitor physiology in health and in disease/treatment, and we have developed novel methods for safe, non-invasive measurement of tissue glycogen, triglyceride and cholesterol ester content, to measure glutathione synthesis rate and concentration, and to measure ATP turnover rate. This studentship project focuses on developing and applying improved MR scanner protocols and hardware to improve the accuracy and sensitivity of these measurements, allowing quantification of metabolite concentrations and tissue physiological parameters at lower concentrations and with improved spatial and temporal resolution. The project focuses on development of MR physics advancements and their translation to tools for biomedical research and clinical diagnosis.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
Depending on how you meet the EPSRCâs eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £13,590 (2012/13). A partial award covers fees at the UK/EU rate only.
Person Specification
The successful applicant will have a bachelors degree in physics, medical bioengineering, or bioscience. Prior experience in magnetic resonance and clinical research would be a significant advantage.
How to Apply
You must apply through the Universityâs online postgraduate application form inserting the reference number CL058 and selecting 'Master of Research/Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences) â Cellular Medicine' as the programme of study. Only mandatory fields need to be completed (no personal statement required) and a covering letter, CV and (if English is not your first language) a copy of your English language qualifications must be attached. The covering letter must state the title of the studentship, quote the reference number CL058 and state how your interests and experience relate to the project.
You should also send your covering letter and CV to Pete Thelwall, Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre, Campus for Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 5PL, or by email to pete.thelwall@ncl.ac.uk
Closing date for applicationsÂ
Prompt application is advised as this post is only available until a suitable candidate is appointed.
