Project description
Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship associated with the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing for Medical Devices, a major new research initiative recently awarded to Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Bradford Universities. The Centre will develop stratified and personalised approaches to the design, manufacture and delivery of musculoskeletal medical devices.

Based at Newcastle University, you will focus on developing new material processing techniques, with advanced biomaterials, in order to create new types of medical device which can be manufactured in clinic. 

The work will include device and machine design, prototype development, experimental testing, modelling and analysis and presentation of results.

Value of the Award and Eligibility
Depending on how you meet the EPSRC’s eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £13,590 (2012/13). A partial award covers fees at the UK/EU rate only.

Person Specification
Applications are sought from candidates with a minimum of an upper-second-class Honours degree or a MSc in a related subject (mechanical engineering, materials science, biomaterials, bioengineering or a related discipline). The ideal candidate will have experience with laboratory work and experimental research; have good theoretical and practical knowledge of their subject area and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary subject area.
