EPSRC Project Studentship in Mathematics/Physics underpinning Quantum Computing

Degree Level: Research PhD Postgraduate

Scholarship Type: For UK/EU and International Students

Aims of the project
This is an EPSRC funded project with the aim of investigating the algebraic, geometrical and physical underpinnings of Quantum Computation. The eventual aim is to facilitate the development of viable quantum computers, but the objective is to develop general mathematical modelling frameworks for the various components. This is expected to involve areas such as geometrical representation theory, topological systems (such as topological insulators), category theory and quantum geometry.

This award  is open to UK/EU and international candidates and provides full academic fees at the UK/EU rate together with £13,590 pa maintenance for 3.5 years.

For more information visit:  http://www1.quantum.leeds.ac.uk/~phyjkp/TQI/CentreTQI.htm

There are two PhD studentships available for immediate start.

The Supervisory Team will be Professor Paul Martin (Algebra research group in Dept of Pure Maths), Professor Frank Nijhoff (Integrable Systems & Mathematical Physics research group in Dept of Applied Maths) with Dr Jiannis Pachos and Prof Timothy Spiller in School of Physics and Astronomy.

Minimum Academic Requirements (if English is not your first language, then candidates must also meet the University’s English language requirements):

PhD candidates must have, or expect to achieve a first or good upper second class honours degree, or equivalent in a subject relevant to the programme of study.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have obtained a valid certificate (no more than two years old) which may be either:
IELTS - an overall band of 6.0 with no individual skill band below 5.5 in all components, OR
iBT TOEFL - (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 87 overall and not less than 20 in listening and reading, 21 in writing and 22 in speaking

Funding Information
UK and EU applicants will be eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance.

International (non-UK/EU) applicants will be eligible for full maintenance but fees will be paid only at the UK/EU standard rate (UK/EU rate £3,828 and International rate £14,400 for Session 2012-2013) so applicants will be required to fund the difference.

How to apply for this funding
You must make an online application for an academic place on:
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/students/apply_research.htm

and in Section D Finance under ‘Sponsor Details’ please enter here that you are seeking the EPSRC Project Studentship in Mathematics/Physics underpinning Quantum Computing

Alternatively you can request an application form by email to: rp_applications@leeds.ac.uk

and in Section J Finance where it asks you to enter ‘sponsors which have made an award/been approached’ please enter here that you are seeking the EPSRC Project Studentship in Mathematics/Physics underpinning Quantum Computing

Entering these details will ensure your application is then considered for both an academic place and for this funding.
