Applications are invited for a fully funded ESRC CASE Doctoral Award to be held at  Lancaster University in conjunction with Community Futures, Preston. The project, âTroubled Families: Discourse, Policy, and Intervention in the North West Since 1939â, will examine the history of central and local government intervention in the sphere of the family, and the experiences and responses of those deemed to be âproblemâ or âtroubledâ.
The award is a partnership between the Department of History and Community Futures, and the PhD will be supervised by Dr John Welshman (Lancaster), Dr Sally Sheard (University of Liverpool), and Denise Partington, Chief Executive of Community Futures. Community Futures is the successor organisation to the Community Council of Lancashire (1942), and continues to support, develop, and empower local communities through the provision of information, advice, and direct assistance and action. This Award will provide the opportunity for the doctoral student to gain firsthand experience of work outside an academic environment, as well as the academic and financial resources required to achieve a PhD in British social history.
The deadline for applications is Friday 18 January 2013.  Please send a CV and letter of application outlining your suitability for the role and a full CV including educational qualifications to Mrs Ghislaine OâNeill, Postgraduate Administrator, Department of History, Lancaster University LA1 4YT, or g.oneill@lancaster.ac.uk. Enquiries about the project should be addressed to j.welshman@lancaster.ac.uk
This Postgraduate Studentship is being offered on a +3 basis. In other words, candidates will have achieved a level of research training that will allow them to proceed directly to a PhD. This will usually have been through the attainment of a previous Masters qualification. Candidates are advised to check the ESRC guidance on eligibility for Studentship Awards which can be found in the following document:
