The Department of Political and Cultural Studies at Swansea University invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship to start on 1 October 2016 (full-time study), on the subject of “Militarism in Post-Soviet Russia: War, Identity and Culture, 1990-2000.â€

Research may be on any dimension of this theme but must address the nature of militarism in Russian society and culture in the first post-Soviet decade. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Michael Sheehan and Dr. Eugene Miakinkov, and will spend a year in Russia consulting archives and other research centres. An opportunity to work and carry out research at the Bush School of Government and Public Service in Texas will also be available. Finally, the student will be required to participate in training events organised by the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre, especially events associated with the Language-Based Area Studies pathway.

Academic Requirements:

Candidates should have a 2:1 honours degree or above in a relevant subject such as Soviet, Russian and East European History, Politics, and/or Culture. A reading knowledge of Russian is highly desirable.
