The Post
This 3-year PhD studentship (covering fees and a living allowance), jointly funded by ESRC and Skills Development Scotland, is targeted at a highly motivated individual who wishes to work with our team on a comparative study of Scotlandâs vocational education and training system in an international perspective. The successful applicant will conduct their PhD in Education working with Professor John Field (School of Education) and Dr Marina Shapira (School of Applied Social Science).
Project summary
The PhD will be part of an innovative research project comparing the performance of Scotlandâs VET system with that of other UK nations and other relevant countries. It will assess the impact of VET on transitions to employment and on the labour market outcomes of young people in Scotland, and in comparator countries. It will also identify good practice in the Scottish VET system and will look at successful VET policies and practices in other countries which could be transferred to Scotland.Â
ESRC expects that new studentships will normally start in October or February. Applicants are encouraged to apply if they have excellent academic records and an interest in research in the social sciences. Applicants will hold a strong Honours degree or equivalent, have an interest in vocational education and training, and will be EU citizens. They must also be willing to undertake research methods training, including some development of advanced statistical methods.
The University of Stirling provides a full range of high quality doctoral training, and the School of Education is a member of the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre which offers further development opportunities. The successful applicant will join a strong cohort of doctoral students currently supported through the Stirling School of Education.
