Glasgow Caledonian University and the National Library of Scotland
Start Date: 1 October 2013
Introduction:
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and the National Library of Scotland (NLS) invite applications for a three-year collaborative doctoral studentship. This studentship is fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (ARHC) and the successful candidate will be registered at GCU and will be supervised by Dr S. Karly Kehoe (GCU), Dr Annie Tindley (GCU) and Dr Maria Castrillo (NLS).
The aim of this project is to demonstrate that, far from being a people confined to Britainâs geopolitical margins, the outlook of many northern Scots, alongside other rural Britons, was inherently global and was focused on the transformation of their local communities. The successful candidate will interrogate the archival materials specifically related to northern Scotland within the rich collections of the National Library of Scotland and those of the lesser-known regional archives in Inverness, Perth and Argyll and Bute. In addition to the production of the thesis, the student will also work with Drs Kehoe, Tindley and Castrillo to build a travelling public exhibition, hosted by the NLS and partner archives in the Highlands and Islands as well as some local schools, to display and interpret the key research findings. This will be accompanied by a series of talks and interactive activities, to increase the potential impact of the exhibition, and the research behind it.
Funding:
This studentship will cover home/EU fees and will provide a maintenance stipend (currently £13,726) for each of the three years of study. In addition to this, the NLS will provide a total of £3,000 to the student (£1,000 per year).
Training:
The Graduate School within GCU will provide detailed training and learning opportunities for the PhD candidate on all aspects of the PhD process. The National Library's role is to provide the student with instructions and tools in the use of the Library's collections for his/her research and to make available staff expertise which will facilitate use of those collections.
Enquiries:
Informal enquiries should be sent to Dr S. Karly Kehoe (Karly.Kehoe@gcu.ac.uk).
