Fully-funded PhD Research Opportunities in Social Sciences

The University of Essex is offering 16 fully-funded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentships worth between £18,325 and £21,575 per year for each year of study for talented postgraduates studying within our Doctoral Training Centre.

Students may complete a PhD within one of the following doctoral pathways:

  • analysing language use;
  • applied economics and data analysis;
  • criminology and socio-legal research;
  • economics;
  • econometrics;
  • environmental governance;
  • experimental linguistics;
  • finance;
  • health and organisational research;
  • human rights and research methods;
  • ideology and discourse analysis;
  • international relations;
  • longitudinal social research;
  • management and accounting;
  • politics;
  • political economy
  • psychoanalytic studies;
  • psychological components of behaviour change
  • research methods in health;
  • social psychology;
  • survey methodology; and
  • sociological research.

Our DTC offers students an excellent training programme that includes advanced subject-specific training and a transferable skills programme.

All social science doctoral students acquire core skills in:

  • research design;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • the use of research methods; and
  • data management
