EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Medical Devices

Three Posts

The University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering is one of the premier engineering faculties in the UK. The Faculty conducts research that has been recognised by the last Research Assessment Exercise as being world-leading or internationally excellent, placing Nottingham in the UK’s top five universities for engineering. The Faculty is a vibrant and supportive environment and provides state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities.

Applications are invited for 3 fully funded PhD studentships (3 years) in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidates will be part of a new multi-disciplinary research team working with postdoctoral researchers at the University of Nottingham, as well as with other academic partners in the Centre (Universities of Leeds, Bradford, Newcastle and Sheffield). There will also be opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral researchers to liaise with the Industrial partners of the Centre.

The studentships will be funded by the University of Nottingham and the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Medical Devices. The studentships below will focus on next generation Class 3 medical devices for musculoskeletal repair addressing the manufacturing challenges through our expertise in manufacturing novel materials, processing and imaging and modelling. Therefore we are looking for students who are interested in one or more of the project areas listed below:

PhD studentships are available in the following areas

  1. Manufacturing and Processing of novel Biocomposites incorporating multiphase micro and/or nano structures
  2. Next Generation imaging and modelling for manufacturing through improved fidelity and models of hard and soft tissues
  3. Medical device manufacture for stratified patient groups through design for manufacture and process chain adaption

Students will work under the supervision of two or more academics including Professor David Grant, Professor Nick Warrior, Dr Joel Segal, Dr Ifty Ahmed, Professor Ed Lester and Dr Donal McNally. Supervisors will be assigned based on PhD topic areas.

Students should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level in materials or mechanical/manufacturing engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related discipline.

The studentships will cover PhD tuition fees and a tax free stipend for three years (£13,726 for the 2013-14 academic year) for UK/EU students. Additional funding may be available depending on industrial collaboration through the Centre. The studentships are expected to start in September/October 2013.
