The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science now invites applications from excellent candidates who wish to study for a PhD in any of the research areas covered by the School: Actuarial Science; Pure, Applied and Financial Mathematics; and Statistics. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic excellence and outstanding research potential.
The School offers a lively research culture with a thriving group of around 250 taught postgraduates students and over 100 postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and academic staff. The School hosts three research groups: Mathematics, Statistics and the Centre for Actuarial Science, Risk and Investment, and is a member of the Kent Centre for Finance.
Kent is among the best research-intensive universities in the UK. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the university was ranked 24th out of 159 institutions for its world-leading research, with six of our subject areas (including statistics) in the top ten nationwide. The School is preparing an application to the Athena SWAN Charter for the advancement of women in science and is a member of the London Mathematical Societyâs Good Practice Scheme. Applications from women, who are currently under-represented in science, will be particularly welcome; however, the final recruitment decision will be based solely on merit.
The school will offer several scholarships for a September 2014 start at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently a stipend of £13,726 p.a. plus tuition fees) for a period of up to 3.5 years. All PhD students have access to a travel fund of £500 per annum to attend meetings and conferences.
Entry Requirements All candidates must have an excellent academic track record in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science or Financial Mathematics and hold a good Honours degree in a relevant subject or equivalent. A Masters qualification such as an MSc or MMath or research experience would be advantageous.
Some positions will be offered as Graduate Teaching Assistantships.Â
