Funded Studentships for the MSc Applied Health Research

Applications are invited for a full-time 1-year masters studentship for the MSc in Applied Health Research, funded by the University of York and hosted within the Department of Health Sciences, commencing October 2013.

Award

Funding is available for a maintenance grant of £12K plus home student fees (£5,900). Overseas students will have to pay the difference between overseas fee rate and home fee rate.

For students whose first language is not English there is a minimum requirement of an IELTS score of at least 7.

Process for application

Applications should be received no later than 30 May 2013 before 4:00PM.

Masters in Applied Health Research

This MSc provides an ideal training for anyone wanting to become a professional researcher in the applied health field or for anyone wishing to develop careers in the health sector, where the ability to take a critical, evidence-based approach to health problems and solutions is increasingly valued. The course offers students an excellent grounding in applied health research methods, including systematic reviews, RCTs, epidemiology, applied statistics and qualitative methods. Teaching is led by Professors in the Department who are acknowledged experts in their fields and the large majority of teaching sessions take place in small groups.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we were ranked joint first nationally for Health Services Research (where most Trials Unit staff were entered) and fourth for Nursing and Midwifery Research. Our research in epidemiology and public health research was also highly regarded, with 90% judged as being of an international standard.

The Department has expertise in the full range of methodologies that underpin excellence in applied health research. These include trials methodology; data linkage and the analysis of complex data systems and surveys; observational studies (quantitative and qualitative); systematic reviews and economic evaluation.

We have an international reputation for high quality applied health research relevant to current and emerging challenges in health and healthcare provision; and for training the next generation of researchers.

The research evidence we produce improves our understanding of the causes, consequences and distribution of health, illness and disease. We are equally committed to using our research to inform improvements to health and healthcare provision.

The department has over 130 researchers who attracted £10.6 million in research income for 2012/2013. Our research was rated equal top for Health Service Research in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
