EPSRC stipend (currently £13,716/year, tax free) and industrial top up (up to £3,000/year depending on applicant) for 3.5 years. The studentship will also cover the full home tuition fee (£3,900/year at The University of Manchester).

This ICASE PhD project will investigate the mechanical behaviour of pure plastics and fibre reinforced plastics in a range of temperature and strain-rate using experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. The expected outcome from this PhD project is to provide fundamental understanding of the brittle facture mechanism, develop engineering strength model (including constitutive model, damage model and failure criterion) and associated material characterisations, and implement them into LS-DYNA applications in order to improve the predictability of plastic material failure in automobile industry. Regularly meetings with the industrial sponsor (Jaguar Land Rover Ltd) will also be held.
Due to funding restrictions applicants should be UK residents and should have a 1st or 2.1 degree in a relevant science or engineering subject, such as materials, mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering. EU and overseas applicants can be considered (subject to universityâs approval) if they can demonstrate excellent capabilities, but the funding can only cover the stipend and home tuition fee.
