John Doran Memorial Scholarship

  Scholarship Value:£13,726 per annum   The Scholarship: This scholarship is offered on a 3 year basis, Depending upon satisfactory progress The John Doran Memorial Scholarship is a funded full-time PhD studentship awarded in memory of Dr John Doran. One Scholarship is available for entry in 2013, to be awarded competitively across applications received from candidates wishing to undertake research leading to the award of a PhD for a thesis addressing a topic in British and/or European medieval history between c.400 and 1500.  Within this broad chronology, applicants should note that the Department possesses particular research strengths in the following areas:

    • Conversion and church building in Anglo-Saxon England with a particular focus on the kingdom of the Deirans.
    • The body, health and healing in Anglo-Saxon society.
    • The social history of the Low Countries during the late medieval period.

The John Doran Memorial Scholarship covers the full-time UK/EU tuition fees plus an annual maintenance stipend for up to three years. For 2013/14, the stipend will be £13,726. Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Applications should include:
    • A completed University of Chester Postgraduate Research Degree application form including contact details of two referees (at least one must be familiar with your most recent academic work)
    • A project proposal of up to 500 words
