Stipend of up to £15,000 per annum

The Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics at the University of Liverpool (UoL) seeks applicants for a fully-funded 4-year PhD studentship commencing in autumn 2013 in Sensors, Instrumentation and Diagnostics.

This is an exciting opportunity for students who wish to conduct interdisciplinary cutting-edge research. The successful candidate will lead the design and development of a novel optical sensing and imaging device for healthcare applications, and will have the access to the state-of-the-art research facilities in both Singapore and Liverpool.

This project is part of a 4-year joint PhD programme between UoL in the UK and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), the leading Research Institute in Singapore (http://www.a-star.edu.sg/). The successful candidate is expected to spend 2 years at the University of Liverpool, and 2 years at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR. For the 2 years spent at UoL, funding is available to cover the home or international tuition fee, depending on the student’s residency status, as well as a stipend of up to £15,000 per annum. For the period spent at A*STAR, the student will be supported by the A*STAR Research Attachment Program (ARAP), subject to its terms and conditions. The ARAP scheme provides a monthly stipend of up to $2,500, medical insurance, a one-time settling-in allowance of $1,000, and one-time airfare grant of $1,500.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) a 2.1 degree or above in a subject such as, Optical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Fibre Optics, Physics or Chemistry. The project will involve optical & electronics experiments and instrumentation, programming and theoretical modelling.
