The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program was setup to encourage and empower young people particularly of African descent to acquire the quality education they need to succeed. The MasterCard scholarship program is a $500 million global initiative. According to the founders "the Program will select 15,000 Scholars, primarily from Africa, who will be unified by a common philosophy of change and ethical leadership". The MasterCard foundation scholarship is a fully funded program that covers tuition and stipends for Bachelors and Master's degree program. This prestigious scholarship recognizes international students from Sub-Saharan Africa who come from the lowest socioeconomic backgrounds and show outstanding academic and leadership qualities. Those considered for this program demonstrate high academic achievement, exceptional records of service and activity in their schools and communities, and a commitment to return to Africa after their studies to make an impact on social and economic change in their home countries.
