Description:

Ink jet manufacturing technology is positioned to see significant growth in the manufacture of components. This PhD will investigate and develop mathematical models and computational algorithms which will use data from sensors placed on the ink jet printing machine to predict the quality of the parts being fabricated. These models will be embedded into software and validated against test data gathered by our industrial partners.

This PhD provides a unique opportunity for the candidate to work with industry partners which are collaborating with the university on this exciting project, and who aim to use additive manufacturing technologies to fabricate high reliability electronic components that will be used in medical devices and renewable energy (photovoltaic) systems.Â Â

Candidates should ideally have a background in applied mathematics, computational intelligence or engineering (mechanical, electrical, materials, etc) with a strong mathematical and numerical content. Experience with software languages such as C, C++ or Fortran is also required.Â Â Â Â

The successful candidate will receive a Â£13726 bursary (years 2 and 3 linked to RCUK Doctoral Stipend rate) plus a contribution towards tuition fees of up to the equivalent of the Home fee (currently Â£3900 pa).

Applicants must hold a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Bachelorâs or Masterâs degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and have UK or EU citizenship. Â Â
