MRC Advanced Course Masters Studentships 2013

MRes Translational Medicine (Interdisciplinary Molecular Medicine)

Prestigious MRC studentships are available to candidates seeking entry on the Master of Research (MRes) in Translational Medicine (Interdisciplinary Molecular Medicine) in September 2013. Studentships provide full support for tuition fees in addition to a tax-free minimum stipend of £13, 590.

The MRes Translational Medicine (MRes TM) aims to train the next generation of scientists able to 'fast-track' biological and scientific data into advanced therapies and diagnostic tools. Our understanding of the molecular basis of disease and drug mechanisms has improved dramatically in recent years, yet there is a distinct shortage of individuals able to apply this knowledge into effective clinical benefit. Employers now demand skill-sets comprising biological, medical, physical and computational characteristics.

The MRes TM seeks to address this by providing intensive training in 'omics' skills and techniques such as genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. The MRes differs from other UK based bio-molecular courses by taking a unique 'systems medicine' approach to these different 'omic' platforms and data. The emphasis is not simply upon equipping students with knowledge and understanding of biomedical technologies, but their longer-term application in order to 'translate' bench to bedside research.

With an extended 35 week research project, and advanced research and quantitative methods training provided, the MRes is ideally placed to equip graduates to progress into PhD research, pharmaceutical/biotechnology R&D or a clinical academic career. Our students benefit from cutting edge research facilities and the wealth of expertise and support available from eminent and early-career scientists.

Further information on course content, structure and details on applying can be found on our website.

Applications for MRC funding are welcomed up to and including Friday 14 June 2013. Places for 2013 entry are limited so early application is encouraged.

Studentships are available to UK/EU* applicants who hold or expect to be awarded a 1st or 2i (or equivalent) in a relevant biological or medical subject. Any enquiries should be directed to Dr Janine Lamb (janine.lamb@manchester.ac.uk).

*Applicants for these MRC studentships must be UK/EU nationals who have been permanent residents of the UK since at least 1 September 2010. EU nationals who do not meet the UK residency requirement are eligible for studentships providing tuition fee support only.
