Project Description
The Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Macaques (CFM) is a breeding centre and supplies academic institutions in the UK with rhesus macaques for research. Current projects include investigating sleep in captive macaques, particularly as a potential measure of welfare, and developing automated techniques to analyse macaque behaviour in videos. The PhD project will be in one of these research areas, and there is scope for the successful applicant to develop the direction of the programme of work as it progresses.

The successful candidate will be required to spend the majority of the PhD at CFM, which is located near Salisbury in Wiltshire. The initial taught phase of the MRes course will be based in Newcastle.

Value of the Award and Eligibility
Depending on how you meet the MRC's eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of ?13,863. A partial award covers fees at the UK/EU rate only.

Person Specification
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or upper-second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject. Experience in animal behaviour or signal processing and computer vision is desirable but not essential. The candidate will be expected to take the MRes in Animal Behaviour at Newcastle University course if not already taken.
