Application Deadline: 28th February 2014 (Interviews to follow soon after)
Start date: 17th March 2014 , or ASAP
Supervisors: Dr Hrushikesh Abhyankar, Dr James Brighton
Sponsored by EPSRC, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to ?15,000 p.a. (tax free) plus tuition fees for 1 year* **
The project:?
The project will involve the development of a new hybrid polymer composite material for use in automotive structures to reduce the weight, cost and environmental impact whilst improving the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) for BIW applications. This new material will incorporate novel hybrid bio-composites components. The bio-composites will be developed, optimised and tested according to automotive OEM requirements. Case study parts such as a door, wheel arch panel and seat structure will be designed and then a validated by way of an experimental program conducted at coupon and full scales. The project involves extensive testing, material characterisation and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
What you?ll be doing:
You will participate in a fully-funded MSc by research program within the Centre of Automotive Technology (CAT) at Cranfield University, UK. The MSc will give you a unique hands-on project which will include the design, build and testing of composite structures made from bio-materials. This experience will enable you to broaden and deepen your core engineering skills and explore those research areas that interest you most.
What you?ll get out of it:
CAT has exceptional industrial links, with many projects offered by industrial partners. The centre is also involved in many EU and UK funded projects. Exposure to these projects will provide the candidate with valuable knowledge and insight into the world of the automotive industry in general, and the Motorsports sector should that interest you through the Advanced Motorsport Engineering MSc course.?
More about CAT:?
The Centre for Automotive Technology focuses on research, development, education and training through short course provision in relation to vehicles including motorcars, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), motorcycles, competition cars, racing motorcycles, low carbon vehicles (LCVs), agricultural machinery, industrial machinery, military vehicles, space vehicles, marine vessels, air and landing craft.?
Entry requirements
First or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in an engineering or science subject. Knowledge of FEA techniques for structural optimisation is essential. Experience of composite materials and their use in structural design would be an advantage.
Funding:
* Due to funding restrictions full funding is available to UK/EU nationals
** Funding is also available to exceptional international students (adjusted for International Fees)
