Duration of award: 1 year
Award type: MSc by Research
Application deadline: 11 December 2013
Start Date: ASAP
Funded by the European Commission as part of the FP7 RepAIR project this studentship is for up to £12,000 p.a. (tax free) for 1 year plus fees*
Applications are invited for an MSc by Research studentship in the Integrated Vehicle Health Management Centre (IVHM Centre), Cranfield University, in the fields of health monitoring and additive manufacturing. IVHM uses on-board sensors to obtain data on the condition of components which is then analysed to detect faults and even predict when failures will occur. This information is then used to improve the management of maintenance operations. Additive manufacturing is comprised of a new set of technologies that enable 3D printing of metallic parts, allowing for more complex shapes to be manufactured and reducing the amount of material wasted.
Combining health monitoring technologies and additive manufacturing has the potential to result in major a reduction of maintenance times and cost. The capability of IVHM to detect and predict the fault of components can be combined with on-site additive manufacturing devices to cut maintenance delays. This is critical for aerospace companies that seek to maximise the use of their fleets.
The research project will focus on the certification of health monitoring systems for parts manufactured using these new additive manufacturing techniques. The aim is to understand the regulatory requirements these technologies face. These include all the testing and validation necessary to implement them on the filed as well as to maintain their capability throughout their lifecycle.
Doctoral Training Centre
This research degree is associated with one of our Doctoral Training Centre, which is funded in part by the Research Councils and industry. A generic core skills training programme is provided for all research students. This is structured as a series of half day or full day events and acts as a social and networking forum to foster and develop Cranfieldâs research student community.
Entry Requirements
Applicants for the post must have a first-class or upper second-class degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related area. Knowledge of certification in the aerospace sector would be a distinct advantage as would experience additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Good interpersonal and communication skills and computer literacy are also required.
Funding
*This studentship will cover the tuition fees and provide a bursary of up to £12,000 p.a for one year. This studentship is for UK/EU students only.
All non-EU nationals are very unlikely to be eligible for this funding under the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1997.
