Two MSc by Research studentships for a quick start
Application deadline: 30th May 2014
Eligibility: UK, EU
Duration of award: 1 years
Supervisors:
Dr Peter Jarvis ? Senior Lecturer in Water Science
Dr Andreas Nocker ? Lecturer in Water Microbiology
Sponsored UKWIR ? the UK Water Industry Research group, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to ?17,000 p.a. (tax free) plus fees*
These MSc by Research projects will use innovative tools to understand how particles influence disinfection in water treatment. Disinfection is a crucial process for providing safe, reliable and high quality drinking water through controlling microorganism levels in the water. Particles may interfere with disinfection by shielding and protecting microbes as well as using up the disinfectant. These projects will look at how different types, sizes and shapes of particles impact on disinfection. The outputs from the research will be extremely important for the sponsoring water companies who all use disinfection processes as the final step before drinking water is supplied to their consumers.
The students will be based at the Cranfield Water Science Institute at Cranfield University. The student will need to spend significant portions of time collecting samples from different UK water companies, working in close collaboration with their scientists, operators and water quality managers. Students will also need to present their research findings regularly to the project team.
Entry requirements:
Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as microbiology, environmental engineering/science, chemical engineering, chemistry, biology. The ideal candidate should have some understanding in some, or all, areas of microbiology, but sufficient training will be provided by the supervisory team. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills for regular interaction with other stakeholders, with an interest on high quality research.
