MSc by Research Studentship Pesticides in Groundwater

Application deadline:  25th March 2013

Supervisor:  Dr Pete Jarvis

Duration of award: 1 year

Award type: MSc by Research

Funded by Anglian Water, Affinity Water and Lonza, Cranfield University offers a studentship of up to £17,000 p.a. for 1 year plus UK/EU fees* is available

Some pesticide chemicals seem to find their way into drinking water from many unusual sources. This exciting project, working with two water companies, will investigate and monitor how some specific pesticide chemicals can enter ground water sources.

Selecting two sites for investigation (one each within Anglian Water and Affinity Water operational areas), a pesticide sampling campaign will be carried out. Here we will measure concentrations at strategic points in the groundwater catchment area. The first part of the work will be to identify the appropriate sampling points for the catchment once a clearer understanding of the local area has been established. Sampling will be carried out over a range of climatic and hydrological conditions. Specific weather events (storms, droughts, extremes of temperature) will be sampled more intensively. These occurrences can then be linked to prevailing metaldehyde concentrations in groundwater.

The second aspect of the work will concentrate on a laboratory based experimental programme of pesticide synthesis to understand whether pesticide-like chemicals can be produced in the environment under specific environmental conditions.

Anticipated Start date: April 2013

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a First or Second Class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as Chemistry, Environmental sciences, Hydrology or Water sciences.
