The Institute for Social Change (ISC) (www.humanities/manchester.ac.uk/socialchange) at the University of Manchester offers an MSc programme in Social Change. Two MSc Scholarships of £5,000 are available for full-time study in the Institute for Social Change for 2013/2014.
The MSc in Social Change is a one-year graduate program that develops studentsâ social research skills (including quantitative and qualitative data analysis) and then applies these skills to understanding of the social and political processes driving social change, rigorously examining both the theory and evidence that inform debate and social policy. The course provides insight into the causes and consequences of the unprecedented social, political, religious and ethnic changes affecting contemporary societies. Students review and critically evaluate cutting-edge theories of socio-political change, rigorously examining the empirical evidence to test competing theories. Students also undertake advanced training in quantitative social science research methods and statistical analysis.
See: www.humanities.manchester.ac.uk/socialchange/masters/
Modules include: Social Capital and Social Change, Comparative Citizen Politics, Religious and Ethnic Change, Introduction to Quantitative Methods, Applying Quantitative Methods, Methodology and Research Design.
ISC offers an outstanding environment for postgraduate study. Sociological research at the University of Manchester was ranked joint first in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, producing the highest proportion of âworld leadingâ research of any UK institution. The School of Social Sciencesâ teaching was rated as âexcellentâ by the last Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) teaching assessment exercise.
The MSc in Social Change is an ideal foundation for applying for a PhD (we are part of the ESRCâs North West Doctoral Training Centre). The MSc in Social Change is also an ideal foundation for careers in policy, government, the charitable sector, the media, and in a wide array of research-related careers.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and potential, judged on academic qualifications and performance. We will also evaluate applications on the basis of non-academic achievements and applicant commitment to the MSc in Social Change.
