Starting April-May 2013
The UKâs first âSolar Houseâ to be solely heated by the sunâs energy all year round is to be built in Great Glen, Leicestershire and monitored by experts from De Montfort University (DMU). Built by Caplin Homes (http://www.caplinhomes.co.uk/), the Solar House will showcase a range of sustainable technologies. Solar energy collected in summer will be stored by heating the ground beneath the building and this energy will be retrieved through a heat pump when needed in the winter http://www.dmu.ac.uk/about-dmu/news/2013/february/uks-first-solar-house-to-be-built-in-leicestershire.aspx .
An MSc research student is required to monitor the energy flows in the house, supervised by the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD, http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/) at DMU, for the first full year following house completion. The university will publish an interim performance report in April 2014 and a full 12 months analysis the following August. The expectation is that the technology will be rolled out into the building industry through a number of pilot projects partnered with house builders.
For more detailed information about this exciting project, please contact Dr Andy Wright (awright@dmu.ac.uk), who will be happy to discuss the studentship further.
Applications project are invited from UK or EU students with a good first degree (normally first, 2:1 or equivalent in engineering or science).
Ideally, candidates should also have some practical experience in taking measurements, analysing numerical data and basic statistics.
