Project description
The supply chain that is involved in the manufacture of a composite part is not a simple linear independent entity but part of a 2 or 3 dimensional mesh of interactive mini-values chains for different industrial sectors which interact and determine whether a technology can be or should be introduced based on material availability, rate/process cascade effects, people and skills availability and machine lead times.
The CompFore project based at the School of Management, Royal Holloway University of London will create a sustainable modelling tool of the composites supply chain that will allow companies to make realistic engineering decisions on technology insertion to strengthen the UK supply chain, based on real-world economic data as well as the technical merits of that technology. The use of this modelling tool will allow companies to make informed judgments about specific competing technologies, plan training and implementation programmes and create jobs that are anchored in the UK. A key objective is to ensure that technologies are introduced into the UK supply chain when the supply chain is equipped to assimilate them domestically without introducing a demand elsewhere in the chain that can only be met by outsourcing operations overseas.
One PhD studentship in the dynamics of the composite materials supply chains Open to UK/EU Nationals only due to funding restrictions
We have a PhD studentship available open to UK national/EU national and who has been resident in the UK for 3 years or more for start in September 2013. Open to UK/EU Nationals only due to funding restrictions. A full scholarship that covers both the cost of tuition fees and a stipend of £15, 726 for three years. Applications will also be considered from overseas self-funded students.
The successful candidate should have good analytical skills, good knowledge of supply chain management and good knowledge of manufacturing concepts. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the analysis of the UKâs composites materials supply chain required in the development of the CompFore tool.
Applicants should have a minimum of an upper second class honours degree in engineering (includes systems engineering, manufacturing or engineering management). Knowledge in numerical modelling using MatLab would be advantageous.
To apply for this post please submit CV and cover letter. Closing date for applications is 31st October 2013.
