The department Functional Nanostructures at Surfaces (PGI-3) of the Peter Grünberg Institut (PGI) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) is offering a Ph.D. project: Electronic interactions in compound organic monolayers Field of research Compound molecular layers containing two or more different types of organic molecules are promising for obtaining functional materials opening the pathway toward novel all-organic devices, for instance, solar cells. Understanding the exact structure and electronic interactions in such complex materials is a key for predicting their functional potential. In this context, methods based on photoelectron spectroscopy, particularly the ones using synchrotron radiation, are of major importance. In the proposed research project electronic interactions between molecules of different types and the charge redistribution in the compound organic phases will be studied with the recently developed method of tomographic photoelectron spectroscopy capable of precise differentiating the electronic levels of different molecules. Job description We are searching for a motivated PhD candidate willing to join our ongoing research project for study of complex multi-compound organic films. Experiments will be performed in home laboratories of the PGI-3 institute at FZJ, equipped with state of the art electron spectroscopy facilities, as well as at the experimental beam lines of synchrotron sources, for instance, BESSY II storage ring of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Diamond Light Source (UK), ELETTRA Synchrotron Light Laboratory (Italy). The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental and theoretical research groups at University of Graz, FU Berlin, FHI Berlin, Bonn University, TU München and others. About us The project is funded by the program "Fundamentals of Future Information Technology", a strategic research initiative of the Helmholtz Association of German National Research Centres, carried out by the FZJ. With a staff of 4700, the FZJ is one of the largest interdisciplinary research centers in Europe and offers excellent opportunities for research in an international environment. Within the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), founded under the auspices of the German Excellence Initiative, it is closely linked to the RWTH Aachen University. Salaries are competitive (based on TVöD scale, additional allowance depending on the candidate's profile and experience), and dissertations are usually completed within three years. Equal opportunities are a cornerstone of our staff policy for which we have received the "TOTAL E-QUALITY" award. Therefore applications from women and disabled persons are welcome. Requirements Candidates with an MSc or equivalent degree in Physics or a related discipline with an overall grade of at least "good" are encouraged to apply. The candidate should be highly motivated and fluent in German or English, have good interpersonal communication skills, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.
