At the University of Kassel - Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department for Water Quality Management - Modelling and Simulation (Prof. Dr. Matthias Gaßmann) - earliest possible Research Assistant / PhD student (EG 13 TV-H) Part-time (50%); fixed-term contract initially until 31.05.2018 with the possibility of an extension of 2 years (position for academic qualification corresponding to § 65 HHG i. V. m. § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 1 WissZeitVG; opportunity for PhD project). The recently founded Department for Water Quality Management - Modelling and Simulation at the University of Kassel (Prof. Dr. Matthias Gaßmann) is investigating the emissions and fate of chemicals in the aquatic environment by applying and developing process-based reactive transport models. The department is among the leading institutions in the development of models for the formation and fate of pesticide transformation products in agricultural catchments. We are looking for a highly motivated research assistant / PhD student supporting the development of the department and advancing the scientific knowledge in water quality modelling. Tasks: The candidate will support the development of the department and will assist in teaching water quality management. She/He is conducting self-determined research in the area of water quality modelling and is publishing her/his results in peer-reviewed journals. Requirements: Masters degree or comparable in Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, Geo-ecology or other closely related studies. Basic knowledge about the development and application of environmental models Profound interest for self-determined research in water quality modelling Good knowledge of the English language Good knowledge of the German language or the willingness of learning the German language An asset would be the knowledge of a programming language (preferably C++) and experience in using Geographical Information Systems (e.g. ArcGIS).
