£13,726 stipend per annum (with annual increments)
Caffeine consumption has been associated with improved performance and reducing fatigue as well as performance deficits associated with extended performance and reduced sleep. There is current interest into the effects of caffeine consumption through sports drinks, and the proposed programme of work will include both consumption surveys and experiments assessing cognitive effects and physical/sports performance of caffeine and caffeinated beverages.
This PhD scholarship will provide the opportunity for a motivated and capable student to generate new knowledge regarding caffeine consumption through surveys, together with the assessment of caffeine/caffeinated beverages in controlled studies.
The scholarship is available from 1 October 2013 and consists of an annual stipend of £13,726, subject to satisfactory progress, for three years. In addition, full-time tuition fees will be covered for three years (Home/EU rates only). Overseas applicants will be required to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £7,565 per annum).
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or international equivalent) in a relevant area of psychology or pharmacology, sports science, human biology.
Applicants should demonstrate an interest in experimental psychology and psychopharmacology or sports science and human biology, and should have excellent written and oral presentation skills.
